First, I just want to say that I enjoy reading the posts here and it's nice that people have a place to go to talk to other boaters who have been around the block.

My boat has the 3.0 2008 VP GLPJ with an SX drive. I run HD30 Castroil and service/maintain the boat like it should be. It uses about a quart of oil every 50 hours. I just cruise in the boat, no towing at all and it's usually only me and a girlfriend when I'm able to round one up. I do notice a little grey smoke at startup only but always thought that was unburned fuel. The plugs look fine--change those every 50 hours along with the oil. Also, the compression checks on each cylinder. My thought was that maybe the plastic guides in the valves have given way and allow a little oil back down into the cylinder? Would that make any sense? There are no oil leaks. I keep the engine bay/engine clean and would readily see that against all the red paint.

I have 200 hours on the motor. Is the oil use excessive in your opinion?

How many hours do you think you can get out of a properly maintained 3.0 and what type of longevity have you experienced with this engine?

Doesn't seem to excessive. But your compression can have little to do with burning oil since they are typically separate rings on the piston. I would keep a close eye on it and run it till it you get 2 foot v8 itis....

The 3.0 is a great engine and properly maintained will last.......Mine had 450 hours on it when i bought it, it now has about 850 and no issues and this is its 2nd home.
