Any body seen this before? Appears to be water coming from the gasket.

Re: 3.0 Intake/exaust gasket

Howdy,

It's a riser gasket leak. Either the surfaces are not flat, there's a crack somewhere, or the gaskets are defective.

Water could just as easily be running into your exhaust system and into open exhaust valves when you shut down. You need to fix it....

Thanks much, I needed a second opinion even though I new my buddy was right. Will it be OK to run until the end of the year? Maybe 2 months or 25 more hours?

Ayuh,.... Roll the Dice, it might Already be too late....
If it's leakin' Out,... It's probably leakin' Into the motor as well...

IF it get into a cylinder you have roughly 24-36 hours before it siezes.

if it is only the gasket , it``s no big deal : 4 clamps ,bolts to loosen, new gasket and reverse the steps .....

take a close visual inspection while proceding....just in case it would be something else also !

Id replace the gasket now without waiting till the end of the season - a stitch in time and all that.

Make sure to re torque the bolts agter the engine has run and cooled down again so it doesn't happen again.

Does anyone know if this gasket is installed dry? Also could someone suggest a solvent of some type to help with removal of the old gasket. I assume I would "flat file" the entire surface where the new gasket goes. Sorry for all the questions total rookie here.

just looking at it, replace the risers too. If the gaskets leak like that then the odds are there are obstructions.

Drain you exhaust mani's too and check/replace them.

This is an area you don't want to take chances with!!!!!!

If you don't fix this right you will need a new engine not just exhaust components

I hear what your saying, but with only 400 hrs on the motor could the other components be that bad? I will check it out. But my 10$ job , now costs 400$
I hope all looks well when I get her off!

Re: 3.0 Intake/exaust gasket

Depends...

Salt water? How old is the boat? When were the risers replaced last.

It might be a case of needing to replace on the risers (which last, at best 3-4 years in salt water and corrode) You're looking at around $250 to replace them.

I would just pull the risers and inspect.....see if there is blockage, cracks, or a ton of corrosion in there. If not, clean the gasket surface good and put a new gasket in.

Does engine run hot, cuz I'm having that problem right now :)

Well you have to pull it to replace the gasket so check for blockage and rust. Gasket goes on dry.

If the gasket is the "silvery" looking gasket, it is installed with NO sealant of any kind.

Re: 3.0 Intake/exaust gasket

Heres what I have after removal of the riser, The first pic is the best one I could take of the manifold because the top of the dog house is in the way. The rest are of the riser. I am leaning towards replacing it , but it doesnt look as bad as a few I found with a search. Thanks for all the advice and feel free to send more!!!!!
Heck theres even a used one for sale on Ebay that looks worse than this:confused:

Your 400 hrs on the engine dont mean anything since the things sit with water in them when the engine is not running.

How old is the boat / are those risers and manifolds, and have they been used in fresh or salt water?

go to napa and if you get there before 10:00 they can have that 5.00 gasket to you by 5:00 the same day or the latest the next morning. Put a scale up against the edge oand see if it's flat if so re-seal and remount that bad boy. Oh! yea and check for leaks!!!!

Re: 3.0 Intake/exaust gasket

Yeah, that riser really doesn't look bad. I would lean towards just a dried out gasket, probably put on over old surfaces not cleaned very well.
