I bought a 1999 21 triton w/225efi merc new.I took it to the lake to break it in it lost #6 cylinder. (0 compression) It was down about a month and half, mercury replaced the complete power head and would not give me a reason why it blew up. 15 months later it blowed up again in the tn state federation tourn.Really made me mad. This time it was #3cyl. no compression. My motor was a couple months out of warranty,so they cut me a little slack it cost me 1200.00 for a reman motor.W'ell my motor is acting up again ,it doesn't idle right it loses power on top end.It has been to my dealer #'s of times they always say its a recirc line or a throttle pos. out of adjustment.they have run the computer on it.It has 133hrs on it and very little time over 5000 rpm.Im very frustrated to have this much money in something, i dont have confidence in taking fishing. What should i do? Do you know of any one else with this problem???

5nthebox,
Sorry to hear so much mis-fortune with your Mercury. If you purchased the motor new with 0 hours on the powerhead, there should be a break-in period of at least 10 hrs.at a 25:1 fuel ratio. Also not a good idea to run it fast when it's that tight(new).Did the dealer check out the oil injection? Most powerhead failures(that I hear about) on new motors are caused by lack of lubrication or overheating....I hope the dealer informed you of a break-in procedure? :( Maybe the injectors are plugging up?Should have a quality fuel filter installed especially with EFI to filter out water/particles...Hope this helps

After both engine failures they broke down each injector, inspected, and manually fired each one. They also pressure tested the fuel rail. Also, both breakin periods i mixed my fuel 32oz of oil per 6 gallon of gas plus my oil injection. A mercury rep has come down both times and inspected it but will not give me or my dealer a reason why it keeps blowing up.

Yikes!
I hope that 32oz. of oil to one gallon of gas is a typo!?Are you adding 1 quart of oil to 1 gal.of gas AND your using the oil injection?Umm,does your motor smoke much? That mixture is wayyy too rich if thats what your doing.

Sound like you have a MERC optimax it an omc ficht knock off same principal similare problems in the same group you will find also find the Yamaha HPDI the also like to eat power heads.
Thes motors I believe are just a bandaid untill the big 4strokes become reasonable in weight and COST!!!!!!!

Re: 225 efi merc powerhead problems

mercury has had a tremondous problem with the powerheada they are yamaha heads and as the story goes yamaha changed the specs with out telling mercury (so the story goes) and nothing but problems so much so that Bombardier has picked up a few team members for the same reason When at a tourny it is not uncommon to see merc guys with a spare powerhead in the cab so don't feel out of the loop my suggestion is sell it sorry and repower with an older version or better yes go to an evinrude di I tested their 2003 225ho this summer for powerboating Canada and was overly impressed with the product it is the way of the future now merc is trying to introduce a 4 stroke 250 and are atempting to ender the di race but they have at least 2004 or 2005 before they can come to market with a reliable product. Some one might yell at me but I have seen way too many blown powerheads to not have any other conclusiorn or advice but sell it sell it now sorry

Re: 225 efi merc powerhead problems

the theory behind the direct injection is perfect the reality is its not. you get one injector not squirting enough juice you get a bang it only takes one bad shot also they do not like marked gas the kerosean in the die plugs the nozzels and leans out the motor so its a bad situation. the four strokes dont rly on the fuel being atomized as much and this allows for bigger holes in the injector nozzel. SELL YOUR DFI 2 STROKE ASAP!!!! :p

Re: 225 efi merc powerhead problems

So much misimformation....where do I start??
a 225 efi is NOT a direct injected motor, same 3.0 liter EFI that has been in mercs lineup since its inception, which I think was 1994...
The only yamaha powerheads/complete outboards sold as mercurys ARE 4 STROKES
as far as which motors last, whose fail more often, and which end of the product line has more failures, the only people with the real numbers are the warrantee departments of the manufacturers, and i am sure they are unwilling to share this....personally i dont see any more or less powerhead failures in warrantee than in past years, and the DI motors dont seem to be over represented....mind you, this is from MY observation....
