Hi guys - me and my son are trying to get our motor back together. Just put in rings and a new cylinder head. First time on an outboard. Looked pretty straight forward. Wanted to put it through its paces on the stand before we mounted it on the boat. Got some back fire and flame coming out of the Intake. Thoughts or direction? thanks

Have to be 180. Everything was lined up. I had an inline fuel bulb pump. Might have been a little over zealous.

Tried starting it 12 hours later - same flame - can't be excess fuel from hand pump

A four-cycle engine fires every other rotation. It sounds like you may have it firing 180* out. It may be as simply as checking/changing the camshaft position. Firing should only happen when valves are closed.

I needed to replace the ign module on my MerCruiser. I needed to pull the distributor to do so. It would only install two ways. Guess which one I picked? Plenty of spark, but not even a pop out of it, until I rotated the distributor 180*.
