I bought the 1pc to 2pc conversion and it comes with Sierra gaskets...

After reading on here that the Sierra gaskets are not good, which gaskets should I be using?

The boat is FRESHWATER only if that changes things.

Also, I know the manifold to head gasket goes on dry, how about the gasket between the manifold and riser? Does that one go on dry also? Service manual references putting a 1/8th" bead of loctite on this gasket.
Thoughts?

I know I have to carefully clean all the surfaces before any of the installation happens, any other advise?

TIA

Howdy,

If they're NOT the "silvery" gaskets that go on DRY, most of us like the Mercury gaskets (that ARE the "silvery type")...........................

The Sierra gaskets will probably work ok, though install them as the manual indicates if you're not going to get the Merc stuff.....

check the surfaces with a straight edge (and maybe a feeler gage) and absolutely ensure that they are clean and flat . If they're not, they may (& will eventually) leak........

Heres the photo of the item I ordered...

I'll have them in my hand tonight, but they don't look "silvery"

Re: 1pc to 2pc exhaust manifold GASKETS

I find this discussion very interesting, as I am doing the opposite. I am using Sierra gaskets in place of the thin metal coated VP riser gaskets.

I have a 2003 5.7L Gi with volvo penta manifolds and risers. I had an engine miss last year which ended up being caused by riser gaskets and water leaking into the exhaust side (rusted seat and rusted valve surface) I saw no overheating or other issues. The mechanic at the local Four Winns dealer (my boat brand) said he recommends and replaces all the METAL riser gaskets at 100 hours, as he sees them leak after that (salt water use here) and uses SIERRA gaskets, and in fact sold me Sierra gaskets from his parts inventory (versus the VP metal gaskets.) He also mentioned I was lucky to catch the leak early as he has rebuilt engines destroyed by leaking metal riser gaskets at under 300 hours. I ran the Sierra gaskets the rest of last year with reduced compression on one cylinder, and after just finishing working on the cylinder heads, plan to use the fiber Sierra gaskets. As an enginner I might say -- "leave the metal gaskets to cars where they can better assure extremely flat gasket surfaces which are needed for metal gaskets." A thicker fiber gasket should take up the differences in cast marine parts better in my mind.
Just My Humble opinion.

Mercury changed to the "silvery" gaskets some time ago. They're not "metal" per se' (not like the metal ones I think you're referring to.)

I don't think the fiber ones that Sierra uses are all that bad but If I had a choice of both in front of me, I would use the Merc "Silvery" OEM gaskets.....

I will also add that if I was doing it I would spend the extra money and get a dry joint kit (if available) and eliminate the leak problem forever!!!......
