Hello, I am helping my friend tune his recently acquired 8 hp long shaft johnson 1998. But my manual is a seloc 1971-1989 model years only.
The starter on this newer motor is quite different from those in the manual. It looks like an integrated disc bolted on top of the fly wheel. Now I know from experience on the older vertical cylinder starters they can be quite dangerous if not dissasembled properly. Can someone give me directions for this newer starter so we dont have to buy a whole new manual just for a tune up? (if something more serious happens down the road i'm sure he will buck up for a proper manual.....)
thanks,
dave.

Okay let me get the ball rolling myself here.
Am I correct to assume the three screw bolts holding the starter assembly done on the flywheel are all that need to be undone? And if I do that will I unwittingly unleasg an eyeball gouging coiled spring into the air? or not?
thanks,
dave.

You need to exercise a bit of patience here, Dave. This is a weekday and you waited less than an hour to start whining.

You will get your money worth. I guarantee it, but you gotta wait.

If your pal bucks up for the correct manual now he can prevent something "more serious" from happening. Speaking of which. . . what is the problem you seek to fix?

Re: 1998 8hp starter removal

JB thanks for your answer, althogh it wasn't exactly what i was hoping for (grin)
The motor starts right up but wont run unless the choke is partially engaged, almost like using the choke for a throttle. If the choke is fully disengaged, the motor races to a very high rpm. So I thought the carbie was gummed up since the motor hasnt run in a long time. I want to take the carb off and clean, rebuild it if neccessary. But the stupid starter is blocking any access to the plastic air cover which needs to be removed on the carb to get it off.
PS. "more serious" is an putting it lightly. The seloc manual states in capital letters "A VERY BAD SCENE COULD OCCUR" if their procedure isnt followed...hehehe.

I might add that in my infinite experience (kidding) that I've usually seen the opposite occur....that is if you push the choke in (disengage it) the rpms DROP and the motor stalls. But this sucker RACES like crazy when you put the choke in....weird.

Okay Joe Reeves...you've saved my bacon in the past....where are you now?

I think this motor might be a little older than 98, maybe a 93-96....but thats what my freind told me.

Re: 1998 8hp starter removal

The recoil starter is held on by three bolts (screws)....one on each "leg" of the starter. Remove them and just lay the starter assembly back out of the road with out detaching the start in gear protection cable. Access to the carb/cover should be easy from here.

As to the main problem....check the idle adjustment Dave....sounds like it's set too high. When you pull the choke, your actually cutting off some of the air to the carb and basically flooding the engine. With the choke off, your giving it the proper air>fuel ratio which causes it to take off. Check the cam follower roller and see where it's at in relation to the reference mark on the cam, with the throttle all the way to slow. If the roller is still on the starboard side of the reference mark, the idle adjustment is set way to high.

Re: 1998 8hp starter removal

I set the idle adjustment all the way out, but the roller was still on the right (starboard side) of the reference mark.
So I adjusted the timing by turning the adjustment on the threaded rod on the left (port)side of the motor (bolted under the black rectangular sealed pack) until the roller was directly even with the reference mark.
But still racing when choke is put in!
So I think maybe there is an air leak somewhere?
I cleaned the carb, too....wasnt as dirty as i would have liked to see it, quite clean actually.
Any ideas????????
thanks,
dave
