1997 evinrude 130 hp

Any tricks to replacing lower unit on 1997 130 HP Evinrude. I replaced water and can't get lower unit to line up acts like **** rod may be stopping it from going all the way up not sure any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The shift rod sometimes catches in the bushing at the top of the steering arm and you may dislodge it. Try a little grease on the top of the rod and make sure that the offset at the top of the shift rod is facing forward.

It's a lot easier to replace the gearcase if you have the port side of the lower engine cover off so that you can see what you are doing - 4 screws from the starboard side and pull the two clips port side, inside.
