I have disabled the VRO (Varible Ratio Oiling) in accordance with instructions contained in the service manual. I have run the engine out of fuel mixed with stabilizer and oil. I wish to "fog" the engine with OMC Storage Fogging Oil. I can fog it in three areas, i.e., through the fitting on the primer solenoid, direct spray through the carbureators, and through the spark plug holes. Question: Do I have to fog in all three places? Where does the fitting in the primer solenoid fog (does it fog the crancase)? Thanks, irao

There were two models available in 1997. A two cylinder and a three cylinder. Either way the manual is the same. Am I correct at guessing that you prepared the storage mixture and ran the engine accroding to the maunal. If you did, the only thing you would have to do as remove the spark plugs and spray some fogging oil into the holes. Also you mentioned that you disconnected the VRO system, this will not effect which way you winterize the motor. The primer solenoid method, sends the fogging oil into the motor, just at or behind the carburetors. The motor can be fogged this way, in place of the storage mixture, however, this would leave fuel in the carburetors, which if not stabilized, can dry and gum up the carbs. :)

Re: 1997 50HP Johnson Fogging

Iceman, mine is the two-cylinder model. I did not mix a storage mixture. I mixed one pint of oil and 2.5 ounces of stabilizer to 6 gallons of gas and ran the engine out of this mixture after having disabled the VRO. This left no fuel mixture in the carbureators. That is the status of the engine now. I mainly disabled the VRO for the purpose of being able to mix my own oil and gas, and to give me the ability to run my engine out of gas so the fuel mixture would not sit up for a long period of time and gum up the carbureators. Now that I have disabled the VRO and am mixing my own gas and oil, I am wondering how to best fog the engine. Should I continue to mix stabilizer with the gas and oil for operation, and when I get ready to store it for several months, then hook up the can of storage fogging oil to the fitting on the fuel primer solenoid and fog the engine per instructions in the service manual. This would leave my fuel mixture in the carbureators. Thanks, irao
