ok guys i have a mid 90's 60hp merc that starts and runs fine out of the water but once the motor is under load it tends to bog down under any amount of throttle. also the over heating alarm comes on after awhile although the motor is cycling water very well and has a very strong stream coming out of the **** hole. anyone know where i should start?

When you say it bogs down, do you mean the RPMs drop or you get no speed. If it is the latter, it may be as simple as a spun prop. If your RPMs drop, you need to do a compression check.

i did a compression check when i first got the boat idr the exact numbers but i believe they were 90psi on all 3 cylinders. what im trying to say is the boat wouldnt pick up speed it just bogged down the rpms sounded higher at idle then when i gave it throttle but the motor never stalled i managed to keep it alive somehow. as far a spun prop how would i be able to tell? sometimes when in netrual the lower unit makes a clicking sound and if i turn the motor off and spin the prop it clicks as well too..

With a marker draw a line across the area where the rubber bushing is in the prop. Start it up and take it for a short run. Check the line after and see if things have shifted.

You could be over pitched on the prop for the size of the load that you are trying to push. How much dose the boat weigh in a normal run? Motor will bog down and not plane fairly quick and motor will not run up to reccomended WOT and can make the motor run hoter than it should.

First off a spun prop will not set off a alarm and the rpms will be high and speed low if that was the problem. Sound more like the carbs need service as they are running lean and that can cause a overheat. You need to fix this before using again as these motors when they get hot are known to have the cylinder sleeves slip in them...

Re: 1996 mercury 60hp outboard HELP!

Bogging when the throttle is turned up is often a sign of a lack of fuel from the carbs.

Squeeze the primer bulb to see if it improves, is so, the fuel pump and/or hoses are not pumping enough fuel to keep the carbs fuel.

Continued operation with the carbs running lean causes the cyl temps to get hot enough to melt pistons and 'may' be part of the reason for the overheat alarm.

Anytime you get an overheat alarm your should inspect the water pump, if the impeller has taken a 'set', that is, if the blades are curved so much that it is easy to reinstall inside the pump, then it is past time to replace the impeller.

Check these few items and repost your findings.
