I have had a hard time starting this motor. Compression is 117 and 115. After many try's it will start and runs great. Shut it off and it may start or might take another 20 pulls on the recoil to get it going. I decided to check the compression and spark this mourning and found no spark. Unhooked the kill button and tried and still no spark on either cylinder. Question is can a powerpack work then not work? I wouldn't think both coils would go at once? I have no way of testing it but wanted to check here before I just throw money into it for a new one. Any other thoughts on it? Motor is new to me.

I managed to find a factory one and went ahead and ordered it, I hope its the 9 out of 10. Wish I knew how to test!

Correct on your 25 HP you would still have great spark, but at the wrong time.----Hard starting ?----Explain how you use that primer unit / pump on the motor.----Not the same as the primer bulb on the hose.

I have tried it by just pulling it out and pushing it in once and no go. Then pump a couple times and still nothing. Pumped up to 4 or 5 times. Tried it with 1 pump then half way in. Didnt even want to fire. Eventually it has started but after running awhile and stopping its back to the no start and doesn't even try to fire. I have had it on the lake 2 times now and same thing both times. Thats what made me decide to check for spark this mourning and nothing. When running it seems fine. Full power and idles nice but shut it off and 10 minutes later it wont even fire again.

The primer knob is working correctly if you feel some resistance when using. It will not need 5 pull/pushes.

Once the engine is warm don't use it.

That said, you must be diligent looking for cracked or broken wires. Under the mag plate and such.

Could be your power pack is heating up and shutting down.

It doesnt want to start from a cold start. Like when I get to the lake. Primer is working then it seems because gas does squirt in. Only reason I pumped it more was because it never fired so thought it might need more. I am used to a normal choke on my old outboards so did some reading on how to use that primer and sounds like I did at least start out using it the way it was meant to be used but the no spark is where I am stuck. Will a powerpack work then fail and then work again as is run for a 1/2 hour, shut it off, wont start till I pull it over many times and then work again?

Well people complain of that senario and change it out with success so.....I guess so. Never happened to me.

Racerone said 9 out of 10 times that's it....so I hope so.

Coils under the flywheel can do it, bad wires..... I'm just hoping your not flooding it or something but if you have no spark then you have no spark.
Does it die when you are running it and then not start?

No, it will run till I shut it off. It just doesn't want to start again. Seems strange to me doing that? First I checked for spark was this morning being I had it at home. First thing I thought of was the kill switch shorting so I disconnected one wire from it off the top coil where it connects and still no spark.

Your sure that was the kill wire right? Almost sounds like a intermittent kill switch.

Weird how it won't just die on its own.

It was one of the two that comes out of the throttle cable housing. Looks to be it as there are only the two that come from the switch. I agree on it being weird. I could undertand it more if it was shutting down on its own.

Went through the wires this am and found no worn or or grounded wires. It is for sure the kill switch wire that I had disconnected. Maybe the power pack was just on its way out and now went. There is one wire that I am curious about that comes out of the powerpack. The one that goes into the water jacket cover, off the power pack what is that for? Is it some kind of senser? Near as I can tell there is no alarm of any kind on this motor. Looks like the water jacket cover would have to be pulled to change it. The one with the blue end. https://www.marineengine.com/parts/images/hg/omc/5001344.jpg
