1995 Force 70 - Power Trim issue

Hi all,

Well, I recently replaced a bad switch box on my Force 70. Confirmed spark - Problem solved. So, I went to trim the engine up to take it to the boat ramp.....and the trim does not work. Will not go up or down. I DO hear the switch click, so I know the switch is good.

Trim worked fine before I made the switchbox repair - but as far as I can tell, the two should not be related?? Can anyone confirm? On one other occasion the trim did not work and the battery was down to 76 percent charge. I slow charged the battery and the problem was resolved. This time, however, charging the battery did nothing to help. Full battery = trim still does not go up or down. Fishfinder and everything else still receiving power....

Any suggestions would be surely appreciated. I'm scratching my head.....

Also - in your experience, if the trim pump/motor itself goes bad, does it commonly perform badly before failing? My trim was working just fine before this - no signs of problems/stress.....

Re: 1995 Force 70 - Power Trim issue

Sorry nobody has any thoughts on this yet - but....

I picked up a multimeter today, and hooked it up to the green and blue wires that come from the relays and lead to the power trim motor/pump. When I hit the switch, I register positive energy - which leads me to believe the trim motor itself is bad. Hoping someone can confirm my work/theory...

Cheers!

hot wire the motor to a battery. if it works then the motor is okay.

Thanks,

I attached a jumper cable from positive on the battery to the blue wire on the motor. Nothing happened. I guess all signs point to replacing the motor. Ugh.

1995 70HP should be a 2w motor. you have to connect one lead to + and the other to - before the motor will spin.

IF the motor is 3w then is has a black wire for common ground. Then you only connect one of the wires to + at a time and leave the other one open.

Thanks for the response - and excuse my lack of knowledge in these areas, but I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. It is indeed a two wire motor. Green and blue wires. If you could, outline the correct procedure I should take to test the motor?

Thanks

touch blue wire to battery positive and green wire to battry negative. trim should go up. flip the wires and it should go down.

if the motor does not spin when hotwired then the motor is bad.
if motor spins but system does not lift then you are either low on fluid or need a pump rebuild.

to my knowledge no kits exist for hydraulic repair of that system.

Re: 1995 Force 70 - Power Trim issue

there is a $110 motor on ebay that has acceptably decent quality. I think if you took the 110 motor and covered it with a couple coats of flex-seal then it becomes a bargain. Without the flexseal i'm not sure it would last long enough to be worth the effort.
