I have '92 twin 302's with OMC outdrives. One will not shift into forward. It makes a clicking noise generated from a small device located near the linkage at the engine. My mechanic tells me OMC had bad gear sets that year and the gear sets in the lower unit need to be replaced. Does anyone know about this? I am in the dark. :confused:

OMC had more than their share of problems with this sterndrive but by 92 most of the gear oriented difficulty had been worked out.What steps have been taken to assure you that gears need to be replaced?Lower shift cable has several updates,and even with the most current cable can be a bear to adjust properly.Bellcrank settings also must be on the money,as well as shift rod height.

Try www.stonesoup.funkoplis.com everything you wanted to know about a cobra and afraid to ask almost.One problem with the new style gears were they went into service with the same part number at the beginning and old gear sets were mixed with the new. In late 89 after 3 gear sets on one outdrive warranty techs at OMC were telling us to just order a nother set and try it. So there is no telling long the old gear sets were laying around in OMCs warehouse.

hondon;

I am only taking the word of my mechanic that the gear sets need to be replaced. He is new to me but I believe him to be trustworthy. He is telling me that parts and labor are going to run about $1,000. Does that sound reasonable? Thanks for your help.

If you are going the gearcase rebuild route,then do so in increments. Have your tech.tear it down and then point out to you where the failure is ,what caused it,and how he is going to fix it.
