1990 Bayliner capri, wanting to install a larger outboard

I have a 1990 bayliner capri. 18' 6" with a 90hp force engine. The boat moves along great, is fine pulling a tube, and tops out about 35mph.

I have been wanting a little more power, and a little more speed out of it. I found a 1983 150hp mercury outboard with the controls, tach, water pressue gauge for $1500.

My questions are: is it worth my time and money to put this outboard on my boat? Will I notice a nice gain in power and speed with this motor? Is the extra fuel consumption worth the performance gained?

Thanks!!! :)

Is your boat rated for a 150? I'm thinking it's probably rated less. A 150 is usually a 6 cylinder. I'd probably look for a 140HP 4 cylinder to hang on there.

I dont know if its rated for 150hp. Ive seen many other same year and model boats with the 120 force and the 150 force (inline 5 cylinder)... so i guess i assumed it would be ok. Yes this particular merc is a v-6 150hp.

ok, with your suggestion of the 140hp 4cylinder, in your opinion would it be worth the money and hassle?

-Thanks Matt

A non-Force 140 should beat the pants off that 90.

Various fiberglass 18' bow riders are rated for 150 HP max.

since im rather new to boats. Do different makes of outboard use different transom bolt patterns? or is it standarized?

I think it is NOW standardized but it wasn't always. And unfortunately, if there was one that was gonna be different.....it'd be a Force

Instead of guessing.............. Look for the rating label on the boat.

If you install another motor and the bolt holes do not line up........ be absolutely certain you fill the old holes with epoxy and allow it to dry then drill the new holes.

Poked around some boards and a few owners of the Bayliner in question refenced 140 HP as the max rating on the label. It kills me to post this, as I've acknowledged that ol' ezmobee, a stinkin' moderator, is probably right. Yeah... I said 'probably'. ;)

Since Bayliners have an undeservedly poor reputation, if you mount the Merc 150 on it you will not recoup your 1500 at resale time. Also, unless the Force is newer than 1990, you will need to change controls--a hassle. Eother stick with the 90 or get a Force 120 or 150 if you can find one cheap.
