Am trying to remove powerhead. I have everything off of engine but can't break it free of exhaust housing. My Clymer manual says to remove 4 bolts from underneath (?) exhaust housing and 2 retainer nuts(one bow and one stearn) however, I can only locate the one rear retaining nut. Book says to rock engine back and forth to break gasket seal but I'm moving the whole boat doing this. I'm not crazy about this Clymer manual, seems to be too general, is a factory repair manual more specific? 1990 40hp johnson,J40ESELR

Remove lower engine cover, then remove shift rod screw, nut from rear stud of power head, 8 exhaust housing to powerhead screws

Thanks for your reply Clanton, however, do you mean the 8 inverted bolts( 4 on each side of engine), I thought that these held the whole lower unit on. The powerhead sits on a plate that is part of the transom mounting assembly, and then those 8 bolts hold the lower unit to the bottom of that plate, or so I thought

OMC manual pn 507872 section 4 page 4-11 chapter 1 fig 6. Those 8 bolts have to come out, I think the exhaust housing is held in place by the engine mounts.
