1989 Kawasaki Jet ski, starts, idles, slips?

If it was a automobile, I would say that when you rev the engine on take off, as soon as it start building speed, the transmission is slipping. Now I know that is now what it is, but it idles, low power just fine, but when you try to rev it up the engine takes off under power then loses power but the engine revs real high. Any Ideas?

Impeller/wear ring. Replace the wear ring first.
