Hi

Can a moderator move this post to the merc i/o forum please I don't see how to delete it or move it Thanks!

1987 Searay 3.0 Mercruiser AlphOne

I was on the water, made a 10 minute run, stopped and fished, put it into reverse, then neutral then went to go into forward ... nothing
no noise I could hear from sliding clutch dog,
no resistance on putting into gear

Took it to a shop, Mechanic said he could shift it by hand with lower unit off
He said I need a lower unit ...

I am concerned about the shift cables etc.
The reason is I fish a very alkali lake and I am thinking it corroded something ...

What should I do ?

Thank You

John, First post this in the I/O forum on this board. Secondly, look at the shift cable on the motor. it will connect to the lower shift cable at that point. See if the lower shift cable is broken or hard to move.

Thirdly, if your mechanic is guessing that you need a new outdrive ($1300 - $1900), get another mechanic. if he can shift it manually, the OD is likely fine.
