I have recently took my boat to our local repair shop to have some minor repairs done. The mechanic called me and said that I've got low compression on my #4 cylinder. He said the only thing I can do to save my motor is to re-ring (@$1500). My question - is this correct? Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is the only major problem I've had since i've owned it!

What are the #'s on the rest of the cylinders? I would try a decarb, as you have nothng to lose by giving it a shot. Mercury makes an aerosol product called Power Tune that I like. It may not be the answer, but it couldn't hurt. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. They said the compression on the other cylinders were 131-135 #s EA. Where can I get this decarb?

unfortunatly im gonna agree with the advice of you mechanic.there are other reasons that would cause this but they will or should be repaired during the re-ring.such as a blown gasket.dont mess around with a sudden drop in compression.may quickly lead to other more expensive problems.you can do a re-ring yourself.not that difficult if you have a manuel.just takes a bit of time and patients.good luck.
