1986 170 hp Mercruiser I/O Distributor Cap

Help. Was recently told my distributor cap was worn and a replacement would be $400.00. Sounds expensive, but being a relatively new boater I've learned nothing about boating is inexpensive. Any expert opinions will be appreciated.

Trent, thanks for the info. Like I said, I'm new to boating and really appreciate all the advice I've seen on the boating forums. I'm also no mechanic but am learning how to repair some of the simpler things. I've learned a lot just by reading other peoples questions/problems and appreciate all of the "experts" who take the time to share their knowledge/experiences with all us new boaters.

Sounds like someone thought you meant the entire distributor assembly as you probably saw in Trent's link.

catmox,<br /><br />I believe your engine may have a crankshaft mounted ignition system. As I recall these were troublesome and REAL expensive to repair. I do believe there is a conversion that costs less than the $400.00

NAPA sells a tune up kit for your motor for about $25-29 it includes: Cap, rotor, points and condensor.<br /><br />Bob

I just picked up a whole perfect used distributer on e-bay for a 170 for $25. New cap from Mercruiser dealer is about $20-$25. I think someone is giving you some bad info.

Chiefmike, thanks. Not sure if my mech. just said cap to "simplify" things for me or what. But after checking the suggestions I've recd. plan on checking e bay and other places, even if it is the entire assembly, think I can do better than what I was quoted.

catmox, just spell out mercruiser470 in the search box and you'll find plenty of parts for your motor. Forget that $400 guy. Good luck with your boat.
