I recently bought a 1985 Bayliner 1950 Capri Cuddy Cabin. The person I bought it from didnt have an owners manual but told me that the engine was a volvo 2.1 liter. The engine is a volvo engine but someone else told me that bayliner used a 2.3 liter engine after 1983. I cannot find anything in the engine compartment that would tell me what size it so I thought maybe someone on this board would know. <br />Thanks Randy

A friend has an 85 bliner and it has the Volvo 2.1 AQ125B. I rebuilt the carb last night for him. If the drive is volvo, it is likely the 2.1L. If the drive is OMC, it may be a 2.3 Ford engine.

Thanks Jason. It is a volvo outdrive. Maybe I will be able to get a few parts for it now.

It is a fairly easy engine to work on. It is the same base engine as a Volvo B21. I think I was told it was used in the 240 series of cars? Gust be careful to get marine grade parts. Your local NAPA parts store can order Sierra parts for it. You also may want to pick up a repair manual for it. I am looking at the Clymer, which I am usually happy with, but wonder if the Seloc wouldn't be better for this engine. You may be able to find many of the parts you need here at IBoats. Otherwise, you may want to check out ebasicpower.com or boatfix.com. You also may want to look up Sierra Marine Parts on the internet and see if they will seng you their dealer catalog of parts. They sent me one for the asking and it was invaluable in getting the correct parts for both my Mercruiser and the Volvo I am helping ot with.

Volvo used both 2.1L & 2.3L in their boats. They are essentially the same block but with different internals - I can give you details if you want.<br /><br />In automotive language, the 2.1L was a B21 and the 2.3L was B23. These numbers will be at the beginning of the engine number stamped on the block.<br /><br />Aldo

Do you know the location of this stamp? The only numbers I could find on the engine were on a metal tag by the starter, but it started with neither B21 or B23. I must be looking in the wrong area. Thanks again

What did the metal tag say? I believe the B21 or B23 are the block casting nos. There are different engine set-ups that used the B21 or B23 blocks. Post the numbers from that tag and we should be able to determine what engine you have.

Have a great day,

Rob.

HI RSC, is there a round sticker on the valve cover? I had one of these and the sticker was black from age and heat but if you look at it from an angle you may be able to read it. It should start with an AQ. I have a clymer volvo stern drive shop manual 1968-1993 that helped me out a lot with my Bayliner Capri.

This post has a life of its own - like the energizer bunny - it started in 2004 and keeps going and going...
