Anyone have specs on what fuel pump pressure should be on a 20hp motor?

A generic answer would be expect 2-4 psi, depending on RPM.

Enough to keep the primer bulb and carb bowl full. psi #’s don’t really matter..

probably not worth measuring, anyway. If you take off the feeder hose to the carb and pump the bulb, do you get flow from the hose?

A fuel pump pressure gauge is a valuable tool that should be used more. Sure would help in diagnosing suspected fuel supply problems. If you have insufficient fuel pressure, you can dink around with rebuilding the carburetor all day and it won't fix anything.

Replacing the pump diaphragm is simple maintenance. Replace any hoses that are brittle.

Had already ordered kit for the pump prior to test.Had close to 3 psi (if the old gauge I have is accurate)at about 1400rpm or so.I was not sure if it was too high for that low of rpm?Is it possible for a pump to create too much pressure?.Am working on some hose replacements now since I found at least one vacuum leak on one and had found one at the fuel pump gasket while out on the water.

Do primer bulb typically stay on the hard side like when first pumped up?The old one I just replaced never did and the new one does not really stay that hard..

not really rock hard -- differs some between motors. Pump diaphragms can be torn or holed, but can also simply lose their elasticity -- almost the texture of cardboard.

No, it cannot develop too much pressure. It is dependent on the engine's crankcase pressure. 3 psi is good, but nevertheless I'll look it up to see what the book says.

Book sez at least 1 psi @ 600 rpm, 1.5 psi @ 2500-3000 rpm, 2.5 psi @ 4500 rpm. You are well over the minimum, so pump is working as it should.

Have been getting some lean sneezes I guess and hard starting and I can having it running at a low idle speed and it does a cough or backfire and dies.Do have required spark.Runs good at WOT.I had to fix my lead shot on top of carb that BROKE LOOSE acouple weeks ago that was sucking air and that made it pretty lean at idle which was part of the problem. Now I am going thru my hoses and connections on primer and I also had found a vacuum leak at the pump gasket which went away after a very slight turn on the two already tight screws.Figured I will rebuild pump to be safe.It may be the original since it has the original superceded part # on it.Going out now to put the primer hoses on.Then go from there.thanks

Yes, recall the post about the lead shot -- also recall thinking the carb in your pic seemed to be a little different than the parts diagram I was looking at. May be a distinction without a difference, but do you have the original '85 carb or a replacement?

I bought the motor 2 yrs ago with that carb. From pictures and videos I have seen on line it looks original.Well I put the fuel lines on and they are much tighter than before and put the kit in the fuel pump.I should have ran it before doing the pump to see if the lines alone made a difference.Old diaphram seemed a lot stiffer than new.I did start it for a few minutes on muffs which I do not like doing anymore and I did notice a difference in how low I could go down on rpm's before stalling.I still had fuel pump pressure set up on and the gauge was doing crazy stuff(mabe air in it from rebuild at first), but my engine was missing or sneezing or backfireing.? The pressure would bounce at the miss or sneeze. Not sure what it was at this point.Would get a puff of smoke like a bacfire and it would die abruptly.Did this before.I need to get it in the water to further and try and tune it.Did change the link/sync ever so slightly after I ran it..It was retarded a tiny bit I think.
