I have been looking through a lot of threads and can't find a lot of info on the 1984 75, I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing? Were these a farily trouble free o/b? Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks Glen

Re: 1984 75Hp Johnson

The 1984 75hp Evinrude/Johnson was/is an excellent design, but as with anything mechanical/electrical, problems can and do surface. If this is a case where you're thinking of buying the engine, have it checked out by a reliable experienced mechanic first. You need to explain why you're asking to receive a pinpointed answer.

Thanks for the reply Joe, I am looking at buying the motor and was wondering about model specific problems. The motor is in very good shape, and I really like Johnson/ Evinrudes.

Normal problems to check on any engine.....

Compression should be 100+ psi and even on all cylinders.

Spark, with s/plugs removed, should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!

Lower unit should have at the drain plug a normal looking heavy oil appearance, not clear water or a milky appearance (water mixed with oil).

Check that the stator under the flywheel isn't leaking a sticky looking substance down upon the timer base and powerhead. The stator is the beginning of both the charging and ignition system.

If the engine has bveen sitting for many months or years, assume that the carburetors require cleaning and rebuilding.
