It will crank and idle fine but when running it will only run at about half throttle. Anything more and the motor bogs down. Someone suggested that I get a carburetor kit and that would fix it?
Thought I may have a vacuum leak or a dirty fuel filter. Any help would be appreciated.

Ahoy, Miller_time.

One thing that could cause your symptoms is a clogged high speed jet. A carb overhaul and cleaning would fix that.If choking it gets it up to high speed the problem is likely in the carb.

It is also possible that your fuel supply system is restricted or leaking air, or the fuel pump is failing.

If pumping the primer bulb gets it up to full throttle, it is probably your fuel supply system.

Good luck. :)

Hey Miller_time....Budweiser Long Neck fan myself.

Little info needed here. Do ya' got any idea how long the engine set before you run it? Could be if it has set for an extended period of time, what fuel was in it has "laquered out" and is plugging your jets which just happen to be in the float bowl. Look for the pysical things like hard hoses which could let air into the fuel system. How do the spark plugs look? Are you using fresh fuel with the proper 50:1 mix? Just a curious question here that may seem weird, but, what color is the float bowl gasket? Look at the front of the float bowl for a screw plug. It will be a hex head with a screw driver slot in it. Detach the fuel line and remove the plug. If you can look into the hole and see black looking gunk, then the carb will need cleaned and a rebuild kit. Kits are pretty cheap. Keep us posted.

I checked the fuel filter and it was clean.
The fuel is new, but the boat itself has only been ran two or three times in the last year!
I'll check what you said Outboard and keep ya'll posted.

Re: 1983 Johnson 35hp

Where online can I get a carb kit?
Need a repair manual too.
I ran the boat for the first time and it will crank and idle fine, but once I let it run for about 5 minutes and shifted into gear, it would run at about quarter throttle. If I opened it up anymore it would spit and sputter. Also noticed the angle adjusting rod on the motor needs replacing. The plastic clip that holds the rod in place is broken. Any suggestions where I can get these supplies to fix 'er up before all the good crappie fishing passes!!

Well I took the plugs out and they looked pretty gummed up! I'm no marine mechanic but is carbon and oil on the plug or an oily wet plug a good or bad sign? The lower plug was not as moist as the top plug. Wondering if this may mean that it is not firing on both cylinders? Or if one cylinder is running leaner than the other? I bought new plugs but I think they are the wrong ones.
1983 Johnson 35hp

Miller_time

Is your motor in the water or on muffs ? I would suggest you to try to clean carbureator and install new plugs and give it a second chance. The 35´s are good motors, I had three. you can check by removing spark wires and put an old plug in each and make someone cranck it if is has strong blue spark. Also try to creats som gap til ground i. exa 7/16" and hold plut there with thick dry cloth. Make someone cranck. It spark jumps on both - clean carb and proceed from there. Screw low speed mixture screw on top/front of carb carefully and slowly all the way inn til it only touches seat (DONT torque it, will ruin seat ) and back off 1 1/2 turn as initial setting. Try to start it.

Motor is on muffs and i did put new plugs in and I did the low speed thing and the motor seemed to run better, but that was on muffs and not pushing the load of the boat. Seems to be when the motor wants to cut out. I bought me a carb kit and a shop manual and hope to have the bugs out of her soon.

About the moist plugs? Is wet oily plugs a normal thing?

Well I took the carb off, cleaned her up and put me a kit back on it and the thing ran like a top!
Put new plugs and gas in it and she runs great.
The nozzle gasket was bad and the high speed jet was a little gummed up considering the motor had been setting up for almost 8 years!

Great news Miller_Time. Good job! Now, if the old girl set that long, you may want to consider replaceing the water pump impeller before you get caught out in the water with an overheated engine ya' just fixed. The impellers are rubber and will lose their memory. This means the "blades" will not spring back out and the engine will have a tendency to overheat at low rpms. Eventually, it will over heat at high rpms. In some cases, I have found the impeller in pieces in the housing.
