Got the 1982 Johnson 35hp mounted and water tested. The motor sounds Great, BUT when accelerating under load, the motor jumps hard. Jumps is the best way I can describe it, it mounted on a jack plate when it jumps it slam the jack plate.

It like I have hit something in the water.

Out of the water on the hose motor runs great.

99% clutch dog, unless the lower has recently been off, and the shift linkage messed up.

Just thinking, did you remove the retaining screws in the bottom of the housing? Have you got the approiate puller to remove the housing? I have had to heat the lower unit housing to remove the bearing carrier. I know some of the questions may be stupid, but i have to ask. Do you have a manual for this engine?

Are talking about the 2 screws that hold the housing in ? If yes than yes I did. I got the puller, and the manual. I was told to try heat, but with the warning that the housing or the cass some times crack when doing it. Just wanted to check before I heat it

If you look at how the housing is made, it only contacts the lower unit housing in two spots, top and bottom. If you use heat only heat the contact points, not the whole housing.

I have similar problem on 66 33 hp Johnson. I though I hit something in water also. It could also be a misfire I belive. I need to check coils, points, ect.
It runs good and has power, but every once in a while it ffels like it misfired.
So you think it could be clutch dog ? last year the motor ran fine with out this problem. I had nephew help with lower unit oil change, and yep, he pulled the shift pivot pin out, before I could explain. Motor was not run, and I carefully found center with awl. pin screwed in all the way. checked neutral, forward, and reverse. seems ok.

I pulled the gear case apart and this is what we found.

I also was given a gear cass from about the same year as my 35. The hope was I could used the lower unit. I should of looked a little closer but I bought a water pump and found out I was out of luck. I tried to installed the drive shaft and this is what I found.

I pulled the drive shaft out of a 2001 Johnson 25 that has a blown power head to compare it.
