I picked up a Starcraft with a 1981 70 hp Merc, 3 cyl. The water pump impellor is completly shot no vanes left on it at all. I found 3 1/2 of them in the cavity covered by the water pick-up screens, the rest are just gone. The pump outlet tube is clear. Do I need to look futher for the missing pieces or did they just get ate up?

You could try rigging up something to backflush it using the telltale fitting on the block, chances are the vanes are in the block.

While you have the tstat out throw it in the trash and get a new one. Don't know if the 81 has an OT horn, but I had a '75 year model OMC 70 hp that didn't. My tstat stuck shut and it cost me a powerhead overhaul.
