Hello, I have a a problem with the charging system on this motor, I installed all new gauges as well as a new rectifier on the motor. I get no reading on the volt meter and nothing on the tach. I am looking for info on how to diagnose the problem. All connections are good as the boat just had a complete rebuild including new wiring.
Thanks Glen

With a multimeter check the battery voltage with the engine off; then crank the engine and see if the voltage is higher which indicates you are charging. If not then you have possibly a rectigier/regulator which is not working. When both voltage and tach are not working that is a good indication of rectifier that is shot. Good luck

You should be ok, what with that new rectifier, but I agree with Will-try the voltage test first. If neither gauge works, sounds like you may have a wiring problem, such a bad ground. Possible the grey tach lead (signal) wire has an open between the terminal board and the control box. You could run a temporary wire to see if the tach works.

You can also verify the stator is OK by measuring the AC voltage across the yellows from stator to the R/R. You should get => 25 VAC at fast idle (~ 1400 RPM).

Thanks for the help guys. It was all my own fault, I had the wrong contact in the plug on the remote control hooked to the tach, and I had two power leads feeding the trim gauge and lights, plus a bad connection on the battery, DUH.
It's all good now and everything works great.
