I had an O-ring go out in my power trim motor and I purchased and re-installed the 8 new o-rings. (For those who are considering this - this was very simple and easy to do)

I have re-installed the unit, lines etc. and was told that it is self bleeding. I have added more oil, although it seems like it hasn't taken an amount as much as what drained out origianally. When I try and tilt the motor up I just get noise from the unit and no raising.

I am wondering how many times I'll need to engage the motor before it actually will start lifting again?

Does the fill hole screw need to be tightened back on the unit each time I try to engage the unit?

Any pointers will be appreciated. PS. One of the bolts threads holding the bottom section of the unit on seems to be striped and not holding too tight.

Hi,I would check the manual on that model pump but I am pretty sure all of the merc oil pumps need to be bled, usually from the top of the cylinder for down and the bottom for up trim. Good luck!

Thank you, but the manual doesn't say anything about bleeding the pump. In fact, the only thing showing on the cylinder diagram that can be adjusted is the "trim limit switch screw/adjustment". The left cylinder has a zert on the very top, but it looks like a grease zert and not a hydraulic bleed zert.

This is an older motor - 1976. :(

Hi again, my manual(it's a clymer manual)shows all inlines need to be bled. The bleed screws are just slotted screws, one on top and one on the bottom side of each cylinder. Hope this helps!

RESOLVED ;) Just thought I'd post an update on this. The problem was evidently a lack of fluid in the power tilt motor. It initially seemed full because when I poured the fluid in the funnel it ran out and down the sides of the power trim motor housing. I had an inspiration to use a "squirt" type bottle that would fit snugly into the fill hole - then squeezed more fluid in. Voila!!! It started working again immediately.
