I know in Utah when we registered our recently acquired 1978 boat, they had the original cost in their computer system. You might try your states department that handles watercraft.

my father's 78 was 16,000 brand new, fully loaded. he still has it, only 1400 hours on it and has dumped 1,000's more into it over 31 years!
