Hi guys,
I have a 1974 70 hp evinrude, yesterday the motor fired up and idled fine in the water but it would die as soon as it was put in gear under load. At the end of my frustration yesterday, the motor would start but then die. I would not longer idle. I cleaned the carbs today and put them back on with no results. The same thing still happens on muffs in the driveway. It starts and then dies. It will stay running with the warmup lever but only if i bump the choke. Im so frustrated with this motor but really want it to work.

This is what has been done

new plugs
new coils
new internal fuel hoses
new fuel hose from tank to motor w/inline filter
new gaskets all around
carbs rebuilt two years ago and just cleaned again today
sync and link done last month by professional

no leaks that i can see

Any ideas???

Are you sure you cleaned all the little orifices(holes) in the throat of the carbs, the nozzles, etc? If bumping the choke peps the motor up, you have a fuel related problem.

Make sure all fuel lines are in tip top shape and connections are airtight.

Visually check to make sure timer base is moving smoothly(obviously, this needs to be done on muffs....or with cowling off while someone else is driving).
