Hi,

I recently purchased this motor. I hasn't been used since 2003. I changed the lower unit gear lube and sent a sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis. ( I hope I can say that on iBoats website )

They reported: <snip>
Copper's a little high, but it could turn out that that's normal for

this particular Evinrude. Water read at 0.5%, so regardless of

what kind of gearbox this is, it looks like there's some water leaking into the system, so inspect for leaks... <snip>

So, I assume the process would be to pressure test the LU for the water issue, but why would there be copper in the oil ?

I think there are brass bushings in the gears, maybe that's where the copper is coming from.
Was there actually water in the lower unit or was the oil milky colored?
Your moisture could be from condinsation, I would change the lower unit oil and install new drain/vent screw gaskets and run it and then recheck it for water.

There was no visible evidence of water in the oil. No water or milky color. I did replace the oil with OMC type "C" and used new drain/vent washers. I hope it is just condinsation.
