My 1973 6 hp fisherman Model # 6303S backfires and sputters under load. My mechanic said it was probably a coil and/or a sparkplug wire, but I would need to remove the flywheel for access to start the trouble shooting.
How hard is it to remove the flywheel and what are the most common pitfalls to avoid?
Thanks!

Camper, losen the flywheel nut a few turns. Put a large screw driver under the flywheel and pry the fly wheel up while you tap down on the nut squarely. It should just pop up, if not you need a puller. Just make sure when put it back on that the key way is lined up perfectly, before you re-tighten.

A harmonic balancer puller is the tool of choice for removing flywheels. If that flywheel has never been off the crankshaft, the puller will exert the necessary pulling force to the middle of the flywheel without distortion to the flywheel. Never try to pull the flywheel by lifting on it's outer edge. Pullers that engage the outer edge of the flywheel will distort the flywheel.

The age old "trick" that most old guys use, we often don't let customers watch us doing it, is to loosen up the flywheel nut, take it up 'till flush with the top of the crank threads, and with a brass hammer, (while lifting up on the flywheel edges), a sharp wack of the hammer, maybe two. It will come off! A pry bar will not work! a puller using the three threaded holes will, but just takes more time.

Pv,
I have 3hp 1964 Evinrude that I need to pull the flywheel and was going to buy a puller tomorrow when I went to town. I would like to try your trick -where do I strike with the brass hammer?

Hungry Jack,

P.V. is talking about hitting the nut on top of the crankshaft. Be sure you un-screw the flywheel nut to the top of the crankshaft before you start with the hammer. This does 2 things, it's stops the flywheel from hitting the ceiling when it lets go and lessens the chance to knarf up the threads on the crankshaft. I have done it this way and with the harmonic balancer puller. I prefer the puller.
