1972 mercury110 9.8 stop button

I want to add a kill switch with lanyard. It looks like the oem stop button is a single wire (I assume it grounds from the internals of the button). Is this correct? Could I change it out or add a kill switch with lanyard?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Branch off the wire to the button, to yer switch, to ground,.....
