it'll be in the 45 to 50 lb. range...when you removed and examined the carb...did you sync the throttle opening with the timing via. the roller and linkage that open the carb throttle plate?

Flywheel nut torque for a 1974 Johnson 6hp motor is 40 -45 foot-pounds. Your's is probably the same.

As for spark, if you're sure that the plugs are consistently firing, you are probably wasting your time focusing on the ignition system. You have a magneto/points system and even if the point gap is off a wee bit, the motor should be getting proper spark. It wouldn't be a timing issue either, because if you have the points set correctly, the motor is timed correctly. My experince with these motors, is that if the point gap is off by more than a little, the plugs won't fire at all.

If this motor has been sitting around for awhile, I would thoroughly clean and rebuild the carb. That includes removing plugs to clean the passageways. I'm also a fan of putting a small, inline filter between the fuel pump and the carb. Getting your carb clean doesn't help you, if the fuel pump diaphragm is dinintegrating and throwing crap into the carb.

The problem is that it is firing on both plugs i checked the firing with a spark tester that I got from autozone and both wires are firing but when I now take one plug wires off it runs fine and when I take the other plug wire off it stops running. Any suggestions.

If the spark indicator says both wires are giving spark, that indicates two things.

1 - you may have a bad plug (replace both plugs)
2 - that plugs coil or condensor may be going bad and providing an inadequate spark.

Me, I would try the easier thing first, new plugs.

I have tried new plugs, points, condensor and coils. Still doing the same thing will not run with only one plug wire connected, but showing good fire when turning the flywheel by hand are runnig the engine. Any body got anything else. Thanks

One cylinder is not firing.
Spark tester says it's good.
New plugs don't fix it.
Leaves the spark plug wire/end connector as the issue.

How big a gap is the spark jumping on that tester...should be at least 1/4"-5/16"?

Are you saying that one specific cylinder will run the engine on its own but the other one won't ~ or ~ are you saying that if you take one plug wire off it still runs, but if you take the other one off it then stops?
