I just picked up this boat (picture attached). I will be doing a restoration, including removing the 351s and old OMC outdrives. I will use that space for transom gussets and storage. It will get an outboard bracket and twins- I am thinking Etec 90s. I want reliability and economy; economy including the purchase price. Not sure if that will be enough power, but as long as it works okay I could upgrade in a few years when I have more cash. I do not know what this boat weighs- I just ordered an old boat test with specs hopefully that will give me an indication.

Any suggestions / opinions welcome. Thanks.

90+90=180hp

you pulled out how much hp? 240 hp?

240/2=120hp I figure you need to start at twin 120 hp engines and think you would be happy around twin 150's or even 175's

note I ignored the "s" on the end of engine and outdrive!

this has been a back and forth decision for me, and now with a bit more knowledge i realize how much i still don't know! i have considered repowering with modern outdrives /efi, but am being told that the transom will be an issue. outboard bracket creates balance issues. reading and re-reading stuff and getting frustrated! lots of reasons why i can't do my ideas- so what SHOULD I DO? Any opinions welcome! and don't say get another boat- lets just stick with this one for now. I have lots of boats- I want to custom build this one for flying across the Strait of Juan de Fuca at a high rate of speed on my way to a cocktail on the deck at Roche.

Several years ago a member bought a 28(?)ft. Lhurs(?). The stock engine was trashed. Instead of a high dollar replacement Mercruiser, he went to a salvage yard and got a 6.2L diesel out of a GM pickup. The bell housings were the same and with a few home made brackets...everything works. His buildup is still around here somewhere, so it might help you.

Your transom is gonna be an issue, regardless of how you go. You cant hang a dual ob bracket off a '71 transom with 2 big omc holes in it.

you could, however, pick your poison between VP or MC, and put a new transon in for either a GM 260 single, or a pair of 1xx inlines and just cut the appropriate keyholes. A DONER BOAT WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED WOULD BE THE ECONOMICAL WEAY TO GO!.

The thread I was talking about was done by Luhrs28. The boat is a 1977 28ft Luhrs. The thread is still online.

so- there is no way to repair holes without replacing the entire transom?

just too clarify- an outboard bracket that spanned the entire transom, with the VP holes fiberglassed in 'properly', is not a possibility?

MARAUDER RESPONSE
I not only know the Marauder, I bought one from the builder, Ernie Kanzler in 1974. It is special and overbuilt more than any Bertram or ??.
The transom will hold what ever bracket you install with up to 500HP. Yes!!
However, the recommendation is a SINGLE OUTDRIVE with 300HP minimum. I pulled out a STEAM ENGINE with a turbine. YOU HEARD ME RIGHT. STEAM. ERNIE was a creative genius and removed the 2 Holman and Moody Fords he forst insatlled - 600 totalHP and tested the steam turbine . This is 1972 at that time.

I restored it with a single Crusader w/ volvo outdrive. It was a WINNER!
This hull can go flank speed into 6 ft. seas AND NEVER POUND. EVEN BERTRAM 25-31' can't do that.

This was the finest 24'-28' hull ever produced and was always in high demand until he quit the business, He did not build for profit, just satisfaction, as he was independently wealthy (n Ford Family)..

happy to hear how you did with your vessel.

All good info to have Steve, but I would NEVER post my personal or professional email address to a public, open forum. That is a very cool looking boat/hull... Might be a little 'tippy' up on the fly-bridge being so small thought... I am assuming the OMC drives were stringer, and ya, you want to toss them for sure  but the gaping holes left behind will need to be filled.. and only way to do that properly IMO, and be strong, is to re-do the whole transom. If it were me, and boat was otherwise sound, I'd look for a doner boat from the mid 80's and up with twin mercruiser 6cyl or V8 engines/drives. Alpha one/two drives would work, bravo drives better/tougher, but more $$$.. That gives you all the bits and pieces you need, and If it had 351's, there should be plenty of room for two V6's, or small blocks in there. In line 6 cyl may be tight, being longer overall... although they are a great reliable motor, and can be found everywhere fairly cheep. Either way. I'd forget fuel injection, just stick with carb'd motors, and electronic ignition. A nice pair of 350 mag motors and that boat would be a blast. Might find a boat with that set up for $3-6K you could strip down.. If you really wanted to get silly, a pair of 330 hp 454's and bravo 3 drives would do the trick, probly push that thing past 60 mph  but you would be into $12k+ there..
