I bought a used 1970 johnson 85hp hydro electric drive from someone. It ran good , on stand when i bought it. However when i put it in the water i was having trouble getting it started, but eventually did. Then my ignition key switch broke. i was stuck out in the water , so i cut the wires going to control box and ignition and hot wired it to get me back to dock.
so i went and bought a new key switch from advanced auto and wired it up , i got the wiring wrong a couple times but eventually got it right. Now im not getting any spark. so i bought a new amp (power pack) and coil. I wired it up according to instructions. I got 9.5 volts on red wire going to amp while cranking. However when you switch meter to dva you do not get the 200 volts coming out of the blue wire going to coil like you should. I get about 95 v .
so did i frie the amp ? or what could be wrong ? could it be the starter solenoid ? it works , it starts the starter motor. Maybe something else is wrong with it though ?
Im so lost , i cant figure it out .

Will it still run if you "Hot wire it"? How do you know you got the Ignition switch right if your not getting spark.?

No even hot wiring , still no spark. Ignition is wired right cause it does turn over when you TRY to start just no spark

http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/omc/wiring/69_70_V4.jpg , I found the schematic for your model, go to this web site and print it for future use. First insure that your ignition switch is the correct one as 1973 and newer short the ignition in the off positon and open the ignition terminal in the run position. Your model supplies battery voltage in the run position. They take a totally different switch. Next insure that all the wiring on your ignition switch matches. Make sure that battery voltage is present at terminal 9 and 10 (counting from the left) on the terminal board when the switch is in the run position. It should go to zero with the key in the off position. This is your power to the amp. Good luck!

i actually already had that schematic and wired it like it says. Still no spark. The ignition switch however is one i bought from Advanced auto. I had to because where the old one broke and i cut the wires to hot wire itto get me back to dock. The key switch i am using seems to be working fine. Even when you turn the key one click to run the amp gets power it makes a high pitch noise but it is suppose to.Im am getting power everywhere i am suppose to up to the amp. Then the blue wire from amp to coil isnt putting out the right amount of volts. Not enough. i think the amp is fried.
what is a stator ? could it be that ? or rectifier ?not sure ?

One more thing to check, is do you have power to the amp when you are cranking the engine? The stator is the stationary coil for yor alternator, the flywheel is the moving part, the rectifier converts the Alternating current AC to DC, this makes up your charging system and should only be a factor when the engine is running. It's looking more like the amp, good luck.
