1970 Holiday electric shift question

I bought a 1970 Holiday and the guy I bought it from said he used just regular automatic transmission fluid in the lower unit. It also has an electric shift. This was obviously not an original part of the boat by looking at some of the other pictures of Starcrafts, but I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them and if there is anything special I need to know maintence wise. Any help would be appreciated.

Ben we may need a little more info is it and inboard/ outboard or is it an outboard motor . I have a feeling its an outboard although I cant remember the brnd that had electric shift on it ( brain fart ) . There are inboard and out board forums here where you will get a better quicker answer but other than that welcome to iboats and the Starcraft club.

Ben no biggie just help to have all the info :D. I am pretty sure they called those Selectric shift . I still cant think of the brand of the motor but I do know youll get a quicker nswer on it in the outboard forum . we can help with pretty much any part of the boat itself but we are not all up on all the differant drives on them :D Mine for example hs a 70 mercury 80 HP on it .

Re: 1970 Holiday electric shift question

Electric shift most likley is a Evenrud or Johnson. I have had both over the years but would NEVER put transmissiom fluid in the lower unit. The tilt motor yes its ok but not the lower unit. There right the Engine forum is the best professional help.

I had a '72 Evinrude, 50hp with a electric shift. Worked great. The owner manual called for OMC Type "C" in the gear case. Not sure what it was, but it didn't look like transmission fluid.

You probably have a JohnnyRude. OMC inboards AND outboards used to use the same lower unit with the electric shift. They need to use OMC Premium Blend, or Type-C gear oil to work properly. I have a '75 OMC I/O and it is an electric shift and used to own a '72 Evenrude 65hp and I always use the Premium Blend in the lower of both, and Hi-Vis in the upper of the I/O.

thanks for everybody's help.. yeah it's an evinrude starlite. So could I just use regular gear oil like from wal mart or should I use the OMC type C like honker mentioned?

For an electric shift model you must use the exact type of fluid it calls for.
