Hi Everyone I'm new here and have a question.

I have a 1970 85HP Evinrude. Recently I had to change out the wires going to the points and while in there I noticed the oiler wick was dry. I would like to know what type of oil I could use to lube the oiler wick? The reason I think that the oiler wick may be causing me a problem is when at WOT the motor will skip like it just shuts off for a split second then keeps on running until it happens again. I have read that this could be caused by the points jumping because the cam is not oiled or the oiler wick is bad or dry. Anybody have any info on this topic?

Thanks in Advance
Joe

Nothing directly on the felt. The cam should have a very light coating of molibdenum (spelling) grease.
And yes, the points could be skipping. A weak tensioner spring will cause this, or a coil fixing to fail.

I ended up using a fine coating of light machine oil didn't have the grease. I'm hoping it will be ok or least tell me if the problen was the points jumping. The coil and amplifier are both new. Now when you say tensioner spring do you mean the spring on the points? Thanks for your response 12footer

Joe

Yes, I dont don't know (or remember)the technical name for it. But it's the return spring that holds tension on the points, holding them to the cam. If it breaks or gets weak, it'll skip like that,or quit running altogether.
It could also be a minute bit of corrosion, oil or grease under the breaker/condenser terminal.
This is, of course,if it is points-related.
Don't rule-out fuel,water in fuel, a reed hanging open,ect.

Hi xxjman, The ignition system in that motor is very tempramental. It is a low voltage system thru the points. Cleaning the points should only be done with a little alcohol and a piece of cardboard (matchbook cover)using something that will scratch the points even slightly can cause a misfire. there is an anti reverse spring that must be in good shape. Clean the cap and rotor with alcohol and a rag, They gets a powder type coating on them. Sometimes the cap and rotor look perfectly fine, but can cause a misfire. Point gap is very important and if out slightly can cause a miss. Very clean and good battery connections and a strong battery are important. Another problem is side to side movement of the crankshaft. If the crankshaft moves, it can cause the points to open later or stay open longer, result, misfire.
