Re: 1966 merc 650 4cyl Shifter cable
Hi, The cables come in through the same hole in the cover. The barrel for the shift cable sits vertically inside a depression in the casting, there is no pin to hold it in. The Barrel for the throttle cable is attched horizontally above it, holding it down into its little depression. There is a 1/4 turn pin with a lever that holds it in place. The business end of the shift cable rides in a little trough in the casting, it should attach under a little locking device, a piece of aluminum casting that pivots on a 1/4 bolt and self locking nut. You loosen the nut and turn this little knobby affair until a the end of the shift cable is captured under it then lock it down. The throttle cable is attached to the vertical lever with a stud and a nut. Adjust the shift cable before putting the throttle cable in place. Put a little lithium grease or something around the shift cable barrel before you push it into place, it can get stuck in there.
