1963 40hp johnson electronic shift I was out this weekend fishing and backing up from the dock just fine put it in forward and went across the lake just fin but when I went to back up to the fuel dock it picked up rpms but did not move forward works just fine I'm thinking it might be the magnet in the lower unit how do I check other stuff before I pull the lower unit and drop 200 bucks on a magnet I want to eliminate everything else first

Going into the lower unit is the last thing you should do. The first thing is to check for battery voltage at the blue and green wires that go down to the lower unit. You will find them at the rear of the powerhead. Blue wire is reverse and should have voltage when control is in rev. Same deal for forward, which is green. NEVER allow voltage to reach both at the same time while running. That will bust something.

Magnet coils and wires to them can be checked with a resistance test.

Ok I tested the voltage I have 12.75 volts going to the lower unit I tested the ohms I have 8 ohms to the forward coil and 1 to 2 ohms to the reverse coil so the coil is bad lol doses anyone have one they want to sell lol

Take it apart and check the wiring before replacing the coil. You may have a partly grounded wire.

Cable going down to the lower unit may be rotted and/or burned. But you will find that before you get all the way into the coil.

Ok thanks for the info so if I do have a bad wire how would I splice in new wire I can get the old knife connectors but they are like 5 bucks a piece plus shipping and handling can I use something a little easier to get from the hardware store just curious because the wires going to the prop shaft housing will be under oil right

The cable runs in a terrible environment. Exhaust heat, water, and oil. And it has sections with annular rings to provide a seal where it passes through the holes in housings.
