hi guys
i need help with two things
1. has anyone seen this kind of damage to a keel and what would be the best way to try and repair it ??

2. i would like to repaint the bottom of the boat and it is heavily oxidized .
i would like to know if i should strip the bottom to bare metal
or if i could get away with sanding it down to the primer and spraying it with zinc chromate or self etching primer

i would think that you're going to need that welded up somehow.

Looking at the damage I would find somebody that can bend pipe to match the keel and then cut it in half and have it welded to the keel. Keep in mind that the seal on the keel will be no good then. The heat from the welding will burn the seal up and most likely make the rivets loose. Don't know what else to tell you on your keel. The bottom needs to be taken down to bare metal and then a good coat Gulvit put on then the expoxy of your color. Hope this helps.

That is some serious corrosion. Have you got access to the inside of the hull to see what is going on there? Most of us use the gluvit on the interior.

i have had the floor out and theres no corrosion on the bottom there..from the bottom paint i can see that this boat was in salt water and im asuming that someone dragged it up on shore or hit something one time to many and made a hole in the keel and the salt got at it . looking through the holes i can see that its only the keel and not the bottom sheet .im thinking about walnut blasting the keel and putting zinc chromate on it and then geting a keel gard like from overtons and doing the whole keel with it

I would think a realy good meg welder could fix that without breaking the seal on the keel. I am fortunate to have a very reputable Aluminum boat ( large Alaskan boat ) builder just blocks away from my house.

Sounds like you are proceeding carefully. FYI my keel has drain holes every couple feet.
