Hello everyone, I have come and viewed this site many times over the last year and a half since I picked up this little boat with it's big motor. Bought the boat with the assumption from seller that it still ran great!! Of course I fell for it, but as you can see for fifteen hundred boat, trailer, and motor it was an easy fall!! So for the first year I went into home internet self teaching 101. I have motorcycles and other motorized tools/toys and have spent many years saving myself money by being mechanically inclined. Anyway this year serious and finally got the flywheel off. Well this immediately prompted new coils, condensers, points, spark plugs and wires, as well as new fuel lines due to a few pointers I picked up from reading on this site. Well HOO-RAY after many pulls on the cord (figuring out the choke and fuel settings, and flooding a few times) PULL-START is self torture!!But once the motor was running WOW it pushed that little boat across the water doing at least 40kmh. I was tickled pink!!! but of course everytime I have to restart it is a lesson in patience and sweat, but the motor does have an what looks like after market starter installed and a hack job wiring harness, including solenoid. I just don't know anything about how to wire the ignition through to the starter to get it to work. I did pick up a new marine deep cycle battery. I think all I need is power to the starter I can still do everything else like choke manually, but the starter is all I really want anyway to do the hard cranking work. Would Greatly Appreciate any advice or know how??

Normally you could buy that motor with electric starter, I believe. They had a box that mounted on the transom which contained the starter solenoid. I will presume you do not have that box.

The wiring diaghram are real simple. The wires between the ign key switch and the motor were: Power, ground, ign killer, Starter solenoid, choke(if you have electric choke) and overheat(if you have overheat sensor).

Once tuned that motor should start real easy with the pull start.

HI woodsy. Welcome to iboats. Great old motor you got there, but a PITA to pull start as you well know. The starter looks ok and the battery should be more than strong enough (you could even use a small ATV battery if you wanted). Does the motor have a start button on it, or are us using a key ignition? On my old '66 33hp, I had a starter button on the motor itself. I ran the hot/red lead from the battery to the starter post and the neg/black lead from the battery to the engine bracket on the left side of the motor and that was it. She'd start with one touch of the starter button every time. It also had electric choke, but I disconnected it as it was rarely needed even on cold start. Pretty easy to pull a choke knob. I'm not exactly sure how to wire it with a key switch starter, but some one will soon enough. Hope that helps. Here are some handy links that may be of use too. Keep us posted.

Pretty simple to wire, since your solenoid is already there. Red 4AWG cable from + battery to large input on solenoid. Then another 4AWG cable from other large solenoid terminal to terminal on starter. Black 4AGW cable from - Battery terminal to ground on motor (usually connected to one of the starter bracket bolts. Then run a 14AWG wire from the + battery terminal to one terminal of a momentalry pushbutton switch and another wire back from the other pushbutton terminal to the small post of the solenoid next to the large battery terminal. Then ground the other small solenoid post to the engine (usually grounds on the side post of the cut-out switch).

This should help. If you don't have a key switch it gets a lot easier. But how so you shut it off? Choking it is not the best but it does work.

Thank- you for your responses everyone!!, I do have a key switch, still not sure if it works. I did do a power test on the starter and it does work.In Steve ; the throttle control has kill switch in it. This info looks like what I need, I'll go to it and let u all know later how it works out. Thanks again!!
