Hello, 1954 Montgomery wards seaking 12hp model GG9016A

New Plugs, wires, points, coils, carb rebuilt.

It was running one day and just quit, thought it ran out of fuel but I haven't been able to get it started yet.

it was running after new plugs wires and coil, when it quit I repalced the points, when I tried to start it, it ran for a few seconds and stopped. I have rebuilt the carb, with still no success. Is there any kind of timing on this thing.

I have tried priming the cylinders, no response, not even a back fire.

I am in the process of tracking down some reeds, just in case, they look OK but it can't hurt. while setting points I noticed when cranking motor by hand without plugs in, it was pushing a little fuel out the carb.

Any ideas would be great.

Red,

You need several things for it to start.

1. Fuel/air mix.

2. Spark, at the right time.

3. Compression.

One of these has to be missing./ My guess is number 2.

Re: 1954 12hp won't start

If it was running and quit its not likely it jumped timimg unless you didnt tighten the flywheel enough it may have pinched the key throwing the timing off.
Are the plugs wet?Have you checked for spark?
Be sure the coil armatures are not rubbing on the
flywheel. Be sure points are at .020,wires are clean, tight and not pinched.
It is usually pretty obvious
if the reeds are bad, usually you can here and see it spit out of the carb.
If gas is coming out of the carb the float valve
may be leaking for some reason, adjustment, dirt,
bad float etc.

Spike, thank you...It appears upon further inspection, that my key is just about worn out to nothing!!! It is barley catching at all, I can not believe I missed that.

Ok, now how hard is it to replace the key, how do I remove it?

I have a manual for my 100hp johnson, but I have yet to find one for the 12hp.

Thanks to all for the replys and help.

:D

Re: 1954 12hp won't start

The aftermarket manuals for 10 or 15 hp E/J should be very close for your motor.
Never did a key on that motor but should be simple.Just remove flywheel and pick out the
key with pliers or screwdriver.I dont know if it is a woofruf key or a straight key.Be sure the
keyway is in good shape.Point cam may be keyed
by the key as well be sure all is in good shape
Key may be marked on the end that goes down.
cam top should be marked as well.
This comes from a "abos" manual 15 hp Gale a
distant cousin of your motor.
Hope this is some help.
