175 efi mercury icm melted wires burnt

1998/9 175 efi mercury motor had major melt down of wires to rectifer and its self. motor wasent going at time of melt down. had been fishing at anchor for 20 min when i noticed smoke coming from under cowel. its just out of warranty. and mercury australia wont help. what i need is to hear from any one whith similar problem. or any service bulletins that may be related thanks any help or thoughts would be good

hello<br /> unfortunatly yes I have seen this before. the regulator usually overheats and fails due to a bad connection then the stator windings actually have 12vdc on them, the the sizzle starts. merc says this wont happen and I have never seen it covered by warrenty. carefully sort out all burned wires and see what can be salvaged. pull the stator and inspect the stator and the flywheel for damage as well.<br /> good luck and keep posting.
