I just bought a 14ft. flatbottom boat that is not the lightest boat I have ever been. Anyone have an idea what size thrust I should look for in a trolling motor? Right now I think a buddy has a 24 lbs. is that going to work alright?

Thanks for the help

Kevin

Just had a post a few days ago about this, on the same size boat......24lbs. would be OK in no-wind conditions, but I know you would be happier with at least 36lbs...... :)

walleyehed yea I just read your reply on the other post.. and I agree with you on the 36lbs.. nothing worse than being forced to fish where the wind decides to put you!
BTDT too many times.. how ever I don't have this electic motor thing all figured out yet..been reading in the electronics-trollong motors section..

Pikey2574: But you guys can try the 24 lb thrust to see how it acts first.. don't forget the oars! :)

Link I have a 36 # on a 16 ft. and don't have any problems but would be afraid of the 24 not being strong enough

if i were to pick a trolling motor for a small boat like yours, i would get the most thrust i could get in 12 volts (1 battery). i'm not really up with trolling motors but i think you can get up to 42lb thrust in 12v.

Pikey, I had a 26lb transom on a 14' v-hull for a couple of years and it worked well under most conditions. If you can bow mount so much the better to pull in the wind rather than try to push. Trying doesn't cost a dime!!

bubbakat
Oh I agree but no harm in trying his buddys 24lb thrust... which is why I said to bring oars :)

Now we are using a I thought (50lb) but very well may a 42 lb 12 volt transom mount on a 12 ft porta-bote..works great but is sucks battery juice faster than a vampire in feast mode!

Good info on bow mounting.. I didn't know that

bow mounted 24 lb thrust on heavy fibreglas trihull. Works great except in any wind more than 10 knots. I keep the battery charged and replace every other year.
