Check the part numbers on the carbs, or remove a high-speed jet, and compare to the parts list at either MarineEngine (.com) or shop.evinrude.com.

The only difference in them years(small bore) was the 140 was a bridged port motor and carbs..

You've got a replacement powerhead on that midsection. The transom bracket indicates the engine was originally an 87 140 hp long shaft engine. Evidently the powerhead was bad, and the owner replaced it with a 1985 120 hp powerhead from an extra long shaft engine. (the powerheads are a match.) Basically the engine is a factory rated/stamped 120 and it should be no problem to run it on your boat rated for a 120.

Re: 120hp or 140hp

Just some things to consider about the situation-
I doubt anyone's going to look at the plate but if you've still got 140 on the cowling you could get a ticket for having a "140" on it and then you'd have to fight it because the coast guard/fish and wildlife/sheriff/whoever is writing the ticket may not want to participate in a forensic investigation of the plug to determine a match between the coast guard plate and the block. Your insurance, if you've got it, won't cover you for any accident, at fault or not, that could be related to speed if the motor exceeds the coast guard plaque. Obviously you'd just have to fight them and you'd win because it is in fact a 120, but these are hassles you might prefer to avoid if the option to re-badge it ever came up.

Folks put the wrong cowlings on engines all the time. If you are that concerned about it, contact Bombardier. Possible that you can remove the original transom gummed label, sent it to them, with the correct (new) engine's serial number and a complete set of picturres. They may be able to make you a new serial tag. You can call them at 1-847-689-7090. I sent you a personal message.

I tried to get a new serial number plate/sticker from Bomb....they would not hear of it. No discussion. They will not do it.

going to try to get the correct sticker and if i can not then i guess i just loss the one thats there dont want to but dont fancy explaining why i have 2 diffrent numbers on the motor. (florida doesnt register the motor which seems kinda wrong but then again no reg equals no tax on it) jigngrub put me on to a intresting web site for looking at the lenth of the motor in a diffrent thread and when i researched the numbers the 120 had a 20" shaft the 140 had a 17" shaft. tape measure says its a 20" shaft so the freeze plug has to be the right numbers

Most parts on your motor will have a 6 digit number stamped on them. In most cases it's a part number but sometimes it's a casting number. The carbs are under the plastic intake silencer on the front of the motor, although I'm not sure why you're looking for those numbers for identification if you've got the model number for the powerhead stamped right on the back of it and the model for the midsection stamped right on the side of it. The two pieces are perfectly compatible.

The midsection is a 20" which you know for sure from the model stamped on it which shows L for 20", and the powerhead used to be mated to a 25" which is what the X means but the powerhead doesn't care what length of drive shaft it's hooked up to.

Re: 120hp or 140hp

im thinking of trading or selling the motor to get a 90hp with tilt and trim as this motor is realy to heavy for my boat for what i want to do. most buyers wouldnt care but some buys are a pain especially if they have a hull rated 120 max

if you are going to do that,,get a 115. same weight as a 90 with the xtra HP. most buyers also do not want a slow boat.

nada site has the weights...I would get a 80s or newer model engine as you can get one in good running condition for $800-1200, the 90s models run about $1200-2500. the 85 HP- 115HP motors all weight just over 300 LBS
