hi,I just purchased an 18 'starcraft with the 110 mercruiser inboard, engine runs fine but there is a significant amount of water leaking from engine in the rear near the starter area cant really see where it coming? former owner warned me about this but said it would stop once warm but it dosen't stop. new to inboards wondering if there is a seal between outdrive and motor?

Re: 110 merc leaking water?

You need to find exactly where its leaking. Is it on the engine ?
Is it leaking at the transom where the out drive is ?

You did not say if it is leaking while in the water or running it on shore with muffs.

I would suspect that if it stops after it gets warm, it is a crack in the engine that expands and seals when the the block warms up.

Is there water in the engine oil ?

You need to not run this engine and find the leak or it will cost you $ or your life !

leaking on muffs why is this different then in the water? I read another post that said it could be the freeze plug behind flywheel which would make since thats where it seems to be coming from. it is more like a flow then a leak i plan on pulling motor before going on lake. thanks for reply very curios about the difference with the muffs and the lake?

On the muffs , the boat cant leak in the bellows at the transom. In the lake when the outdrive is submerged it will leak.

Pulling the motor is the best thing and will only take a hour and a half.

Very good time to do any maintance and paint when its out.

Re: 110 merc leaking water?

update on leak. got motor out today and it was the core plug located behind flywheel it also solved the tink i was hearing in motor, plug was all chewed up from bouncing off flywheel.motor wasn't to bad to get out but did swear alot when trying to put back in. I'm guessing after doing it with outdrive still in it would be easier to pull both ,put engine in then outdrive?? want to thank appoloosa2 for replying and giving me input on this project

I'm sorry , I should have told you to pull the outdrive. I just thought you would have. You should pull it and check your engine alignment. I know it is off.

You will need a alignment tool or take it to a mercruiser dealer with outdrive all ready off it would be cheaper.

You can find them on Ebay for about $60.00 and will have one forever.

If you have any ? feel free I know that boat inside out.
