‘77 johnson javelin 85 remote control box

I hope remote control box is what you call it.
My mechanic thinks the box might be going out
I am having a hard time, finding the correct one. None of the cables look like they match up.
Does anybody have a good link for one?

just about all the older type Johnson command center shifters will fit up to your cables.

FYI , there is not a lot that can go wrong with those old shifters , mostly just brass sliders/ bushings and a couple of plastic bits , most can be reproduced by someone with basic machinist skills on a lathe , or possibly can be bought new in kit form.

I was told the throttle was not engaging and the choke solenoid was not responding

He was able to fix throttle, the choke solenoid is burned out trying to find another but my searches all yield a different part

???---Test the choke solenoid !!----Simple jumper wire from battery side of start solenoid the choke solenoid should make it click.----I doubt that solenoid is faulty !

A mechanic that was looking at it for me said when you push the key in to choke the solenoid is not engaging

I am not not interested
I just don’t know how to and honestly the responses are not very friendly or welcoming
Not all of us have years of experience some of us have expertise in other fields and don’t know for sure where to start with things like this and again this doesn’t seem like a beginner friendly forum.

One would assume by the basic nature of the questions my level of experience in the boat motor world is not very high.
The problem with going to a good boat shop is there is only one here and they are backed up.

Perhaps invest in a manual or politely ask how to test operation of the choke solenoid.----And the manual lever for the choke.

We would hate to see you spend money unnecessarily. My dad had a boat for over 20 years. He wore out 3 outboard motors on that boat, but he never replaced the standard old evinrude control box. those things just don't have a lot of "technology" in them and they are frequently replaced. We suspect you're not getting good information from your mechanic buddy. The solenoid is pretty basic. It's a electro magnet. when current passes through coils inside, it becomes a magnet that draws and plunger up inside the outer cylinder. If you can connect 12V to it, it should pop up. If it doesn't, it needs to be replaced. If you had a volt meter, you could determine if it's getting voltage. If not, you need to replace the key switch. You asked for help and that's what we're supplying. I think if you look over the responses, we're not being critical of you as much as we find the diagnosis from your mechanic to be a bit suspect.

its the internet , we are " entitled " to free 100% accurate friendly advice , what on earth is the world coming to when you cant get this from a forum ?.

Op , invest in a shop manual , there should be a download on the internet that will help you strip down and diagnose your shifter issues by yourself, as i posted , they are a simple device that not much can go wrong with.

or just chuck a replacement at it like the "mechanic " said.

the thing with forums is you have to give to get back. in other words : have a shot at fixing it , then get back to the people here and tell them what procedure s you have taken to resolve the issue.

if required , i can screen shot the page from my manual and post for you.

as a point to note ,its an old shifter , there is no rocket science ,so easy and basic a dyslectic monkey could strip and put one back together.
