Removing Stuck Tilt Tube - Johnson 90 HP

For anyone who was in the unlucky situation. My engine would not tilt and the motor was straining. The tilt tube was corroded to the motor frame and would not rotate by hand. I had to get that out without mushrooming the threads. Heating the outside frame with a torch did very little. I...

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

I had to remove the motor and raise it up to install a new steering cable. When I raised the motor, the tilt was higher than normal. I started to leak hydraulic fluid from the bottom, on a Johnson 90 HP motor, how do I add any hydraulic fluid? it stopped leaking once I lowered the motor...

    Finishing before gelcoat

I put a layer an extra layer of 1708. I'm about to do gelcoat, but the weave of the fabric shows through. What do folks recommend? Add extra coats of gelcoat, or use a 4 oz. fabric with a fine mesh to apply to the 1708 and then spray gelcoat? The glass turned out okay, I wanted to carry this...

How to fix bubbles in 1708

I tabbed with 1708 and it wet out great, I put 1 layer of CSM with isophthalic resin, let it cure. Came back today wiped the area with acetone, put 2nd layer of CSM followed by 1708. Had a few spots not wet out, white areas. Other areas were fine. It was warm out so the acetone flash off...

    Crooked or warped transom

I cut out a template for the new transom. The old spacing in the well and transom thickness was 1.25 inches, I have one piece of 3/4" plywood cut out, it is straight against the middle, but at the edges or side of the boat there is a gap. See photos. Is this normal? Do I try to wedge...

Crazy or stupid? Uncapping a boat in quarantine to get to the transom.

So, my buddies are trapped indoors while their wives forbid them leaving, really paranoid about COVID19 The one guy who's willing to venture out to help, just tore his Achilles tendon; out for 4 weeks. I have teenage daughters who have <0 interest in the boat, or helping lift off a cap. I...

    Advice for lifting cap

OK, I removed the aluminum trim to uncap the boat. I have read from the How to forum in transoms to measure, but at 194 tabs long, it is hard to find exactly the info I need. I'm guessing this is measure width and then keep the bottom from flexing out after I lift the cap. Is this just...

    Multiple questions on stringers

Newbie problems, still. My stringer template was a little off; I have a gap I can just slide my pinky (1/4") under about only 6" of the length of the stringer towards the bow. The rest of the stringer sits flush. Re-do the stringer or will extra epoxy PB work for larger gap filling? I chose...

    Broken stringer

I tried to remove the old rotten stringer by prying up and the stringer broke. this goes under the cap of the boat. and I do not have the space in my garage, or yard to remove the cap. I tried drilling a hole in the stringer and prying it out, but the wood broke again. I prefer not to chisel...

Marine Plywood or hardwood for stringers?

My old boat needed everything, so here is the view of the floor well, after I removed the old stringers How close to the floor should you get the stringer wells? Does the side wall fiber glass from the old stringer need to be cut down to the floor? See photo. I do not have the greatest...

    Composite Decking & Epoxy

Has anyone used composite decking as a replacement stringer? This stuff is HPDE filled with wood/sawdust filler and dyes. It should never rot or mildew and is pretty tough stuff 1" x 5.5", just about trhe right size I have ways to prep the surface to bond to epoxy. I plan to use epoxy for...

Which brands to buy for stringer and floor repair (West?, TotalBoat, 1708 cloth?)

So, looking at putting in a new floor, like so many others here. Pulled up the fiberglass sheet and saw the rotten wood. Thanks to WoodonGlass and others I have a list, but are certain brands better than other's? The old floor had 1/4" plywood, which was covered by resin w/GSM Should I use 3"4...

    1989 Johnson 90 HP

I have the motor running, the fuel solenoid still needs constant attention, but I noticed oil coming from the prop exhaust. It also is on the side exhaust. Is this lower unit oil leaking, its not green, or just un-burnt 2 stroke oil from the motor? Compression is 140 psi in all 4 cylinders. What...

89 Johnson 90 HP, keep blowing fuse after cranking

OK, when I can get the starter to turn over, if it sits and I try it again the fuse is blown. After 5 fuses, what cause a 20A fuse to blow repeatedly? Bad solenoid? bad wiring, ground connections were checked by the starter and they are tight.

1989 Johnson 90 HP fuel solenoid, no start

I tried starting the boat after it ran for a bit, the trim fuse was blown. After replacing the fuse, the motor would not start, when I turn the key the only thing that clicks is this fuel solenoid, picture. Do I need to replace this? Or could it be the solenoid? Thanks, GSX455

Fixing wood stringer for the motor mount

I got a 82 Renken w/ a Mercruiser 120 and I thought the motor was bad, but it turns out the outboard was seized Once I took the out drive off the motor would run. Fast forward as I'm pulling the motor out and the front motor mount, that bolts to the floor are dry rotted. I've noticed folks here...

When to pack it in on a project boat.

So, I've been working on an oxymoron, a "free" boat. someone gave me a 1981 Renken with a Mercruiser 120 boat, and I took it home thinking I could rebuild it, for not too much money. The motor would not turn over and I took off the stern-drive, and then it turns over. It worked on the motor...

    1974 Evinrude, 70 HP won't crank

Hello folks, I have a 1974 70-HP and it will not start. I've jumped lead to the starter and it engages the flywheel, using a multi-meter and then putting power to the white and black leads of the solenoid, it engages/clicks. I've disconnected the black/yellow kill switch for testing purposes...
