    Opinions on aftermarket johnson/evinrude parts

I've used Sierra and GLM over the years and their parts seem fine. Unfortunately, over the past few years a glut of low quality Chinese parts have appeared on the market. I would advise staying clear of these.

Possible to convert CDI timer base and stator another year?

OK, sorry I read your message backwards. I was thinking you wanted the newer system on the older motor... I do know that there were significant changes in around '78 or so that changed quite a few things on the 85hp including displacement. Hopefully, someone will chime in...

Possible to convert CDI timer base and stator another year?

I had a '76 85hp for a number of years. Seemed like a fairly simple, reliable and solid ignition system as far as I could tell. Why not just fix the original system?

    1967 Evinrude Speed Twin 9.5

Neither of those motors are speed demons but they should get along at a nice clip when matched with the right boat/load.

1973 Johnson 85 HP parts leads.

I had a '76 version of this motor. I scored a CMC PT-130 aftermarket trim/tilt unit for $250 back in the earlier days of eBay. Installation was easy and it worked great. This is a good option. Unfortunately, they're not going for nearly as cheap these days.

Spark plug recommendations for 1973 evinrude 65 triumph.

No fuse is needed. You don't necessarily need a switch either. You could just touch a wire end to the block (B- /ground) to kill the motor. A switch is OK too... either way.

The black/yellow wire goes from the powerpack (CD ignition module) to the big red plug.

Just be careful with the Black/Yellow kill wire circuit. There's high voltage there when the motor is running or cranking. Don't touch any exposed conductors in that circuit until the motor has stopped cranking or running.

Here is all you need to get the starting circuit working. The ignition does not need anything else to create spark. As long as the motor rotates sufficiently it should create spark.

Soak the piston tops and rings with Marvel Mystery Oil or other similar penetrating oil and let it sit for a few days. Come back and see if the compression is improving.

    69 and up 25hp - a good choice ?

I had a '69 Johnson 25hp on my first boat. Great motor! When taken care of properly, they'll probably outlive most of us here.

Thoughts on Sierra carb rebuild kits

I've been running them on my V4 looper for the last 4 or 5 years without problems. They seemed fine to me. What is the perceived issue?

Thoughts on Sierra carb rebuild kits

Sierra kits are good quality, always worked well for me. Just stay away from the Amazon/China kits out there these days - complete garbage!

1976 Johnson 85HP 2 cylinders not firing question

Attached is an image of the power pack circuit, including internal componentry. Also see full wiring diagram: https://maxrules.com/graphics/omc/wiring/V4_1973.jpg Sounds like it's either a sensor coil as one coil fires two cylinders or the power pack. Sensor coils should measure around 15-20Ω...

Broken head bolt. Evinrude 150 E150EXERV.

There's several ways to skin this cat... If it were me I'd take my Dremel and cut a slot in the bolt for a large screwdriver tip. I'd then knock off all the salty junk off around the screw. Then I'd douse it in penetrating oil and let it sit for a while. Eventually I'd use a large square shaft...
