    8MLHU limited RPM

A customer brought me this little 100:1 2 cylinder 2 stroke. Complains it doesn't rev fast enough. Hmm. Carb opening fully. Spark advancing fully. Compression great (about 130 pounds). Plugs look to be burning fine. Starts easy on about 2 pulls. Throttles up great until about 2950. Then more...

    Help Identifying OMC E2951285

I have an old apparently 2-stroke 1-cylinder OMC outboard. It has only wind-it-around rope start (no recoil), a small integral metal fuel tank. U-shaped plastic cowl/cover that attaches both to the carb and the tank mount. Start-in-gear type, and a flat bar tiller handle (broken off). I would...

    Correct Prop Hub?

I have a pair of Merc 115's on a 50-foot pontoon boat. The serial number is: 2B151536, model is 115F631D. The props are "loose" when the prop nuts are tightened all the way down. I replaced one prop and hub due to damage, and that one is now fine. So I got another hub kit of the same kind (Flo...

2000 Yamaha 4 hp 4-stroke tiller handle is floppy

I have a friend's dinghy motor, Yamaha model F4MSHY, which runs well, but the tiller is "loose". It's fastened to the 4-piece carry handle and lower cowl fine, but it seems there is a "steering bracket", apparently now obsolete, that is supposed to bolt to the bottom of the block, and keep the...

Tohatsu America now has the 353650210M (IMPELLER, NS45A2-70A2) in stock. Available from any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer (including me) for $42.50. This is the OEM impeller. These were NLA for a few years, but now you can keep your old 70A pumping.

Is Club Jeppesen worth the $$ ?

I'm looking at joining Club Jeppesen. $89.00 a year for free chart updates. The question is whether it's actuall worth it... Since I use only the Lake Ontario bathymetric chart chip in my SH 390i plotter, I question how often it's updated (by anyone). It may well be a waste of money... or it may...

    Chartplotter recommendations

I'm still using my ancient Magellan Nav 1200 GPS. It has no chart plotting capability, just lat/lon and can do routes and waypoints. I use paper charts of Lake Ontario, and am satisfied with the speed and accuracy of the GPS. But alas, the display is starting to fail, and it's time, after 16...

Better to Lug or Rev a Nissan 9.8

One for Elvin: Last season, I installed a new Nissan 9.8 on my 8,000-pound, 28-foot sailboat, rigged with the 5" pitch x 8.75" diameter, 4-blade HT prop. The factory tach showed max RPM's in excess of 6,000, maybe up to 6,200 -- just below the rev limiter point. The correct WOT range for the...

    Proper Propping of Sailboat Outboards

Last season, I installed a new Nissan 9.8 on my 8,000-pound, 28-foot sailboat. A 15 would have been better for the load, but would not physically fit in the boat. I also installed the 5" pitch x 8.75" diameter, 4-blade HT Solas/Tohatsu prop. I was turning max RPM's in excess of 6,000, maybe up...

    High Thrust Prop Update

The tachometer showed that I was turning max RPM's in excess of 6,000, maybe up to 6,200 -- just below the rev limiter point. The correct...

    Zebra Mussels in Pickup

Just a note for the freshwater guys here... Was preparing for spring launch last week, and happened to notice an odd appearance to the plastic inlet screen/strainer on my 1-year-old Nissan 9.8. Looked sort of like a poorly cast plastic strainer. Didn't notice that when the motor went in last...

    Reverse Thrust

I posted to the Prop and Merc forums, but got no replies. Maybe the Non-Repair experts have an idea... I'm going through a 1981 Merc 7.5 OB, s/n 5848475, 8-tooth prop spline. The motor is used as the aux on a 23', heavy sailboat. The current prop is marked 7P A1 (I believe that means a 7"...

    HT Prop for Merc 7.5

I posted to the Prop forum, but got no replies. Maybe the Merc experts have an idea... I'm going through this 7.5 OB, s/n 5848475, stencilled "COMET" on the side of the block, to get ready for spring. I believe this is a 1981 model year. It has the 8-tooth-splined prop shaft... The motor is...

High Thrust Prop for 81 Merc 7.5 OB?

Im going through this 7.5 OB, s/n 5848475, stencilled "COMET" on the side of the block, to get ready for spring. I believe this is a 1981 model year. The motor is used as the aux on a 23', heavy sailboat. The current prop is marked 7P A1 (I believe that means a 7" pitch) and visually, is a...

VHF with Speaker in the Mic

I'm looking for an onboard (not handheld) VHF that has the speaker in the mic. Reason is the radio will be below, and while I can clip the mic up by the helm, it's hard to hear the speaker. Do I have to go to something like a RAM mic, or is there a unit that is already configured like this?

    Register Dinghy

For a boat tender, is it still possible to put the mother vessel's state numbers on the dinghy, followed by a suffix (I think it used to be you added a T to the end)? eg: NY 7251 BX T Someone suggested that the proper way now is to add a suffix numeral 1 No sure...

BEST plug for 1981 Merc 7.5

Im going through this OB, s/n 5848475, to get ready for spring. I believe this is a 1981 model year, based on the serial number, according to a few websites. The plugs presently installed are Champion L77JC4's. The plugs look like they may have been running a little on the hot side. Not bad...

    Prep Before Barrier Coat

I have stripped the 40-year-old , flaking bottom paint from our 28' sailboat, and will be applying Interlux 3000E and 2000E barrier coat before painting with a good ablative bottom paint. This is not a blister repair -- there aren't any blisters, and the boat lives in Lake Ontario fresh water...

High Thrust Prop for Merc 7.5?

I have had a lot of good results using the Solas 4-blade Elephant Ear props on small outboards for a sail auxiliary. They actually give reverse thrust! But it seems they are only available for the Nissan/Tohatsu 4/5/6 and 8/9.8. I would like to get one for a Merc 7.5, but I don't see one...
