MC-1 165's. Drive install gasket question

The manual, written in 1980 or whatever, says to use adhesive to hold in the o-ring and to install the paper gasket dry. Is that still conventional wisdom? The drives and transom assemblies have been rebuilt and freshly painted so they are clean and flat. 1974 Bertram 25, Twin 165's (replaced...

Have spark and fuel, can't get the rebuilt engine to start

#7 seems like a lot of variance but overall compression will be lower since you cant warm it up before running the test.

I test mounted the drives tonight. All good. Thank you

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

But if it mounts and removes without any real trouble I should roll with it?

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

Do you mean to say that I’m overthinking it or that there’s something else I should be looking for when I mount the drives?

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

Ok, I had the mounts cut 1.5 inches shorter and the port engine aligned perfectly. The starboard engine gets really close but feels like it may be off a smidge… it just doesn’t slide in as well as the port side…. Perhaps it’s just that I inserted the alignment tool so many times on the port...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

Chopped and welded. Too bad they are not steel. Then I could have done it myself.

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

You nailed it. I had this same thought this week and disconnected and removed the mount to go lower today. The engine beds were very rotten and I rebuilt them completely, from the bottom up, and I built them too thick. My lowest engine bracket setting is about 3/4 inch high on the stbd side...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

I have the rigging all set up to lift the front of the motors. I think Im going to wait until I have a second set of hands because moving the winch one click and climbing back out of the boat is getting old :)

MC1 Gimble housing water tube smashed

I'm monkeying with getting my motors lined up, im thinking that one of them is not in correctly and I realized that the shop that "installed" my motors also pinched a ground wire and smashed this Gimble housing water tube. I can see from the parts catalog that the tube runs THROUGH the transom...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

This picture is several years ago before the restoration. The batteries, battery wiring and fuel lines are removed right now because of all the glass work I did. The front motor mounts are about 1 inch from the raised fiberglass edge and you have to go in from the fuel/battery compartment to...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

In my case the front motor mounts are NOT connected to the boat currently. I think that means I will need to adjust the top and bottom nut to LOWER the mounts into place and then drill and lag screw them in place. A cherry picker will be tricky here because I cannot access the adjusting nuts...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

The motors were lifted into place by a shop. I have a cherry picker but perhaps I should span the transom with a wooden header and winch it off the engine bed again?

Thank you....I should have stated that I have read all of this.

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

The motors are for-sure in their original places. The transom assemblies were rotted and rebuilt replacements have been installed with the original inner transom plates, which may not be in the same place as they were before.

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

Oh...My mis read. Sorry. I replaced the bushings in the inner transom plates with new ones and re-used the double washers and collars. Everything was cleaned, sanded and repainted before install.

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

The rear motor mounts are not attached to the engine bed yet. I re-cored and re glassed the transom and engine bed I used the original holes on the outside of the transom to install the rebuilt transom assemblies...Im not sure what you are asking It is a new gimbal bearing, I have tried...

Mercruiser 165's First Engine Align, Having Trouble

1974 Bertram 25. Twin Inline 6 Mercruiser 165's. I had the motors pulled to redo the transom and now the engines are back in -- I'm trying to align them myself for the first time. I'm struggling. One I have pretty close. On the port side I can slip in the alignment tool in until it is...
